A math problem in the Luxembourg edition of the "Clic & Maths" textbook has sparked controversy. The problem asks students to calculate how many liters of pink paint Etienne and Xavier need to repaint the walls of their rooms. Even though there are no surnames, it should be clear that the problem alludes to Luxembourg's openly gay Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and Deputy MP Etienne Schneider.
In a parliamentary question to Minister of Education Claude Meisch, LSAP MP Franz Fayot did not shy away from harsh words of criticism. He asked whether Meisch believed that a Luxembourg textbook should include "homophobic stereotypes" such as the one in the math problem. He also asked if the math problem was going to be removed.
The ministry is yet to reply.
Back in 2018, another political controversy revolving around homophobia in the school context had erupted when ADR MP Fernand Kartheiser openly criticized that primary school students should see an educational theatre play about a gay kangaroo.
