Luxembourg’s Minister for Home Affairs, Léon Gloden, on Monday criticised Germany’s border checks as lacking legal basis under the Schengen Agreement, following the denial of entry to 49 individuals from the Grand Duchy since the start of checks. Gloden firmly opposes the German authorities’ interpretation, which they justify as aligned with the spirit of the Schengen Agreement in combating illegal immigration.
Gloden argues that this reasoning lacks clear support in the agreement’s text. If Germany extends the checks further, intervention by the EU Commission could be considered, according to the minister of the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV).
Border control measures are set to be revisited in a Chamber plenary session on Thursday.
