More than 60 gravestones were vandalised at Bettembourg cemetery during the night of 3 to 4 August, the commune announced in a press release on Thursday morning.

The commune said an assessment of the damage is currently underway and that those affected will be contacted once the extent of the damage has been established, stating that it "condemns these acts of vandalism in the strongest terms".

A police complaint has since been filed, and an investigation has been opened. The commune added that it remains in close contact with the authorities and will take all necessary measures to restore the affected areas.
