Mir si raus!Moving the classroom outside: Campaign encourages more outdoor education

RTL Today
A government campaign urges students and teachers to take their classes out into the fresh air, stimulating development and the learning process.

Learning outside has proven to have many positive effects on children’s physical and mental well-being, nourishing their social skills, self-confidence and connection with nature.

That is why between 10-28 October, the Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth encourages schools, teachers and children to move learning activities outdoors - just in time before winter hits.

There are numerous successful examples abroad: the Udeskole in Denmark, Uteskole in Norway, Outdoor Learning in Scotland, Draußenschule in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, “class outside” in France or “learning beyond walls” in Canada.

For teachers, meanwhile, leaving the restricted four walls of the classroom can help them strengthen their relationship with students.

A website has been set up to offer ideas and preparations for lessons related to mathematics, languages and more. For example, an activity combines games with learning verb conjugations. Another is a math trail.

Each class participating in the Mir si raus action from October 10 to 28 can document their activities online and win a prize.
