During a press briefing on Wednesday morning, MP Marc Spautz and the co-chair of the CSV Parliamentary Group, Martine Hansen, presented several proposals to incite more adolescents to learn a craft.

The CSV demands that artisanal experiences should be a fixed part of the curriculum in primary schools. In secondary schools, internships should become compulsory for students in classical secondary education (Lycée Classique) as well, according to the CSV. The opposition party also demands the introduction of “talent tests” in secondary education, which it hopes will help orient students according to their strengths.

The CSV also demands a valorisation of the Technician’s Diploma and an expanded offer for further studies in the context of a Higher Technician Certificate (BTS) or a bachelor’s degree. In addition, the opposition party demands a valorisation of the career of civil servants holding a master craftsman’s diploma.

The CSV parliamentary group makes these proposals ahead of a discussion on the topic in the Chamber of Deputies on Thursday, initiated by MP Marc Spautz.

Crafts businesses have been experiencing a substantial staff shortage in recent years and the social standing of the trade is declining, Spautz lamented. The CSV MP stressed that, in his eyes, “craftwork is high-tech!”.

There are about 8,000 crafts businesses in Luxembourg and the sector provides around 100,000 jobs.
