This constitutes a sum of around 14 million euros which will not be recovered by government coffers.

In a response to a parliamentary question on the matter, posed by MP Marc Goergen, ministers Tanson and Bausch said around 41% of the parking fines were issued to non-residents.

The ministers went on to say they could not give exact figures for sums recovered by the judiciary police, as this procedure is done through registration.

In the last year, some 6,300 fines worth around 1.2 million euros were mentioned in the police courts, covering infractions against the Highway Code as well as unpaid cautions.

Added to the sums gathered over the last few years for such infractions, the total was estimated to be around 6.4 million euros - far from the expected sum of more than 20 million.

The ministers noted that a law passed in 2018 decrees that speeding fines now take the form of letters to simplify the process and avoid cases in court. Those who fail to pay the average €49 fine within an allotted time frame are now given increased penalties.
