The open letter (FR) is addressed to Minister of Immigration and Asylum Jean Asselborn and criticises the functioning of the Consultative Commission for the Evaluation of the Best Interest of Unaccompanied Minors, which decides over whether a child is to be sent back to their previous country of residence.
The organisations believe that any decision relating to the future of a child should be taken by a body focusing on child protection rather than a migration authority.
The letter thus argues that the Consultative Commission should include members familiar with matters relating to the mental health and education of minors, which is currently not the case. CCDH and OKAJU further propose to introduce respective training programmes for the members of the Commission.
