Police engaged in a thankfully not commonplace turn of events on Tuesday evening, having to give chase after a motorist refused to stop when it transpired he was driving towards Esch-sur-Alzette on the wrong side of the road. The incident escalated to a police high-speed chase once the wanted driver sped through a red light on Route d'Esch in the capital.

Police officers followed the white Mercedes, which was being driven by a man and had a female passenger, back towards the city centre, through Merl-Belair and Hollerich, with all parties at times driving at high speeds. The driver then turned via Rue du Bouillon onto the A4 motorway, recklessly driving on the wrong side of the motorway.

At this point, the police directly ordered a complete motorway closure on the northbound A4 in the vicinity of Pontpierre.

Upon encountering the road block, the driver attempted to turn around and rammed into a police vehicle, lightly injuring a police officer. At this point, officers began firing shots at the vehicle, which stopped after 500 metres and was blocked in by police vehicles.

Once stopped, it transpired the driver of the Mercedes had been hit in the leg. His female passenger was not injured, but both were arrested upon the order of the public prosecutor's office. The cause of the couple fleeing the police remains to be determined. The motorway towards the capital was closed through to Wednesday morning.
