With the return of spring, the forest cemetery in Dudelange finally represents the "return to nature" desired by more and more residents. Bereft of leaves at its inauguration in February, the cemetery is now a peaceful, leafy haven, which has already welcomed its first residents. Mandy Kremer, head of department at Dudelange civil service, said ten people in the area had wished for their ashes to be laid to rest in the cemetery, with nine Dudelange residents and one from a neighbouring municipality.
The city will have to disperse future ashes at the second tree, having used up the ten spaces available at the first tree. Kremer said they were unlikely to run out of space in the cemetery, pointing out they have the option to enlarge it in future by adding more trees.
Residents of Dudelange, as well as the neighbouring Rumelange, Bettembourg, and Roeser, have the option to select the cemetery as their final resting place. Kremer was quick to reassure residents of other municipalities, saying the procedure is the same for all.
