Polfer stressed that the municipality reacted “swiftly” to the current situation and its consequences.

The City of Luxembourg does not content itself with symbolic displays of solidarity but also provides practical help, Polfer stated, citing the municipality’s efforts to provide shelter to Ukrainian refugees as an example of this.

The mayor pointed out that the municipality rented the ‘Grace’ Hotel in Bonnevoie and made the former Creos building in Hollerich, which can accommodate up to 200 people, available to refugees.

The premises were vacated on Monday and then refurnished by the National Reception Office (ONA), allowing the first Ukrainians to move in. The hotel in Bonnevoie will be available from 1 April, Polfer specified. She added that Luxexpo is and will remain a key location as well, especially seeing as a second hall will become available soon.

However, Polfer acknowledged that Luxexpo will only remain an option until 11 April, as the management plans to return to “business as usual”, which Polfer stressed is “understandable and important”. This is why the structure in Hollerich is “essential”, the mayor went on to say, pointing out that another major location is currently being prepared in Contern/Moutfort, which will be able to accommodate up to 1,000 people.

In addition, 100 to 120 people could also be accommodated at the old fire station on Route d’Arlon, Polfer stated.
