Minister of Economy Romain Schneider conceded that the mortality rate of young cattle dying in their first year was, at 15%, rather high. 10% is considered the average rate.

Pirate MP Sven Clement said the current rates were worrying.

The reasons for behind these exceptionally high numbers are multiple, and can be traced back to illnesses affecting the airways or intestines, or issues with the birth itself.

Cattle under the age of one year are defined as calves. Most deaths - 42% to be exact - die just after birth.

Every third calf, of the 1000 average dying per month, perishes within a month after birth, and every fourth does not make it to six months.
