A 22-year-old driver has died after police opened fire during a pursuit in Saarbrücken.

The fatal incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday. The man was killed in a police shooting, a public prosecutor confirmed later that day.

According to German media reports, the driver attempted to evade a police check at around 1am on Sunday and fled the scene. In a dead-end street, he reportedly tried to turn the vehicle around and is said to have injured a police officer in the process.

Shortly afterwards, officers opened fire on the fleeing car.

According to the newspaper Bild, three other passengers, aged 19, 22, and 23, were in the car. A 19-year-old passenger was also struck and injured. The driver’s injuries were, however, so severe that he died at the scene.
