Statec's recent statistics show that riding a motorbike remains a comparatively dangerous pastime and/or means of transportation.

Of the 642 motorcyclists involved in accidents during the last three years, 282 were seriously injured while 311 escaped with light injuries. Only 24 came out unscathed.

Statec’s figures, presented this Friday, also indicate that the most serious accidents occur in the north and east of the country, and mainly take place during summer and on weekends. There is a clear correlation between good weather and motorbike accidents: 79% of victims are injured on sunny days.

Speeding accounts for almost half of all motorcycle accidents (44%). It is therefore not surprising that nearly half of all accidents (43%) occurred on straight stretches.

Every 5th accident can be traced back to negligent overtaking or lane changing, with tailgating being the cause of every 10th incident.

Only 3% of motorcycle riders tested positive for alcohol – compared to 17% of other drivers.

35% of injured motorcyclists do not involve any other road user, with falls being the most common cause of accidents without third parties (48%). The average age stands at 40, with 17% percent of bikers being under 25 and over 55.

Nearly half of those involved in accidents are either tourists or cross-border workers.

These figures confirm that motorcyclists are vulnerable road users, accounting for 26% of serious injuries. Despite these numbers, the popularity of driving a motorbike is on the rise: the 2015-2018 period saw a 40% rise in motorbike registration.
