The police’s mobile speed cameras recorded more than 50,000 speeding offences in 2025, according to figures released in response to a parliamentary question.

Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden provided the data, revealing that the five mobile cameras operated by police caught a total of 52,970 vehicles over the course of the year. This averages out to approximately 145 speeding incidents per day.

The minister also offered a snapshot of the devices’ activity in the current year. On 9 February 2026, for example, 55 drivers were caught speeding in Diekirch. Just three days later, a camera in Erpeldange recorded 31 vehicles exceeding the limit.

The tolerance margin applied by police varies depending on the speed measured. For speeds between 25 and 100 km/h, a margin of 3 km/h is deducted. For speeds exceeding 100 km/h, the margin is set at 3%.

The penalties for speeding are outlined in the highway code and are structured as follows:

  • €49 fine: Applicable for exceeding the speed limit by less than 15 km/h in a built-up area, less than 20 km/h outside a built-up area, or less than 25 km/h on a motorway.
  • €145 fine and two-point deduction: Applied to any speeding offence that exceeds the thresholds mentioned above.
  • Serious speeding offence: According to the police website, an offence is classified as serious “only in the case of a repeat offence following a first serious infringement.”
