According to a new report by the National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC), the number of bankruptcies declared in the first quarter of the year remained stable compared to previous years, while the number of liquidations has reduced.

285 businesses declared bankruptcy in the first three months of 2026. Although this is usually accompanied by job losses, the number of redundancies was down 27% compared to the same time period in 2025.

The situation in the construction sector saw mild improvements, with 45 bankruptcies - 5 fewer than last year.

51 commerce businesses closed down, an increase of 42%. This resulted in double the number of job losses compared to the first trimester of 2025.

The hospitality sector saw 18 bankruptcies, or 51% fewer than last year. The number of jobs in restaurants, hotels, fast food outlets, and bistros has managed to increase by 44% in spite of the closures.
