The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps was formed one year ago as a kind of coalition between the fire brigade and civil defence. The idea behind the fusion of these forces lay in achieving a better scope of the land, increasing availability and implementing a standard format when it came to training and equipment. In terms of management, information and communication, it seems there remains space for improvement.

At around 6700 members, the main body of the emergency services is well established, with more people joining the forces than are leaving. Volunteers constitute a large portion of these, making around 90% of staff. Nevertheless, calls for recruits continue.

A more detailed summary of the reorganisation of national rescue services is currently being drawn up, to be presented to the Chamber of Deputies in autumn.
