16 April brings a double celebration to the Grand Ducal Court, as both Grand Duke Henri and his son Prince Sébastien mark their birthdays on the same day.

Grand Duke Henri celebrates his 71st birthday today. Born on 16 April 1955 at Betzdorf Castle as the eldest son of the then hereditary grand ducal couple, Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte of Luxembourg, Henri Albert Gabriel Félix Marie Guillaume served as head of state of Luxembourg from 7 October 2000 until 3rd October 2025, when he abdicated in favour of his son Guillaume.

Today marks the first birthday Henri celebrates since stepping back from the throne. Upon his accession, he had been granted the full title of Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Duke of Nassau, Count of Sayn, Königstein, Katzenelnbogen and Diez, Burgrave of Hammerstein, Lord of Mahlberg, Wiesbaden, Idstein, Merenberg, Limburg, and Eppstein.

Grand Duke Henri has five children:

He is also the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren, namely

  • Prince Charles (born 10 May 2020) and Prince François (born 27 March 2023)
  • Princess Amalia (born 15 June 2014), Prince Liam (born 28 November 2016) and Prince Balthazar (born 7 January 2024)
  • Prince Gabriel (born 12 March 2006) and Prince Noah (born 21 September 2007)
  • Victoire (born 14 May 2024) and Hélie (born 17 October 2025)

Prince Sébastien also celebrates

The second birthday at the court today belongs to Prince Sébastien, the youngest son of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, who turns 34. His Royal Highness Prince Sébastien, Henri, Marie, Guillaume, Prince of Luxembourg, Prince of Nassau and Bourbon-Parma, was born on 16 April 1992 at the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg.
