There is currently no state subsidy available in Luxembourg for the installation of private electric charging points, after the law governing the scheme was not extended in time.
The gap in funding comes at a moment when the government is seeking to promote electromobility and energy independence in light of the conflict in Iran and rising fuel prices. However, the legal basis for the subsidy has expired, meaning those who install a home “wallbox” today cannot currently claim financial support.
The previous scheme, which covered up to 50% of costs, expired on 31 December 2025. A bill to extend the subsidy has been tabled but has not yet been passed by the Chamber of Deputies.
Assurances have been given that the new law, once passed, will apply retroactively from 1 January 2026. The Environment Agency has confirmed that applications can already be submitted and will be processed once the legislation is in force. However, applicants should expect a delay of several months before any payment is received.
The government tabled bill 8577 on 9 July last year and submitted it to the Council of State three days later. The Council only delivered its opinion last week, which must now be reviewed by the members of the Parliamentary Environment Committee.
The stated aim of the bill is to encourage more residents, particularly those in apartment buildings, to install electric charging points through a simplified procedure.
The new “Klimabonus Wunnen” law, which covers subsidies for energy-efficient renovations of existing homes – such as the installation of heat pumps – is also still awaiting parliamentary approval.
As with the electric charging points, the government intended to extend the Klimabonus scheme with specific adjustments beyond 1 January. The aid is designed to apply to applications submitted between 1 January 2026 and 31 December 2030, but this is contingent on the corresponding law being passed.
Photovoltaic systems are excluded from this delay, as a separate bill governing them has already made pre-financing available since the beginning of the year.
