The construction of the planned South Hospital in Esch-sur-Alzette has been pushed back once again. Health Minister Martine Deprez confirmed the delay in her response to a parliamentary question from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP), with work now not expected to begin until 2028, pushing the previously targeted opening date of 2032 into further uncertainty. No precise start date has been given, nor has any indication been provided as to when the first patients might be admitted.
After sitting on the drawing board since 2014 and suffering repeated postponements, this year was supposed to be the one where the project finally got off the ground. Among the main reasons cited by the minister for the latest delay is a change within the group responsible for planning the project. The plans have also been revised once again to reflect the requirements of a modern hospital, including, in the wake of COVID-19, the incorporation of a global pandemic preparedness concept.
