There will be accommodation for 20 people next to café Courage, with work also taking place above the café to complete 14 furnished rooms. The renovation is expected to be completed in 2020. On Wednesday morning, they celebrated the completion of the roof in the presence of local councillors.
The furnished rooms will be completed in February, with space for single people, couples, and families.
Mayor of Luxembourg City, Lydie Polfer, explained that there will be a number of rooms which will interconnect with communicating doors, which will be aimed at families. People will register and then be able to live in the rooms.
The night shelter will be aimed at people who need to spend the night in a safe environment. It will differ to the Foyer Ulysse as it will have simpler administrative procedures. In contrast to the furnished rooms, the night shelter has been designed for the homeless.
Polfer said the shelter would provide accommodation as well as getting social plans into place with street workers, to help rough sleepers off the streets and out of the parks.
The structure is set to open its doors in August 2020 after a year of constructions. The whole project will cost the City of Luxembourg around 2.7 million euros.
