A new traffic concept is set to ease congestion in the Cordal region. The municipalities affected are Differdange, Pétange, Sanem and Käerjeng, with a combined population of around 80,000 residents.
The individual municipal representatives have been working on this plan for two years, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Mobility and the Ponts et Chaussées. The Käerjeng bypass will become a part of this concept. The current version of the ring road envisages the company Saint-Gobain in Dudelange to be relocated; the bypass will later run through the company’s current location, connecting to the N5 near Schuller.
Heavy goods vehicles and buses will no longer drive through residential areas, so that residents of these four municipalities can regain some quality of life. Travel by train, bus, and bike are to be given greater weight in the overall mobility mix. An important element of this concept is also the Boulevard de l’Europe in Pétange, which is to be widened from two to four lanes. This will divert traffic away from Pétange, a particularly important region given the heavy volume of transit traffic which passes through this tri-border area.
The representatives of the four municipalities are receiving support and the green light from Minister Yuriko Backes and those responsible at the Ponts et Chaussées. The municipal councils have also been given an overview of the plans. Information evenings for residents of the municipalities of Differdange, Pétange, Sanem, and Käerjeng are also planned.
