The Wéngertsbourse is a new initiative by LEADER Miselerland tackling one of the quiet crises facing Luxembourg’s wine country: abandoned vineyards. Christian Schmit went to find out more, catching up with project coordinator Félix Weyer among the vines along the Moselle.
So what exactly is the Wéngertsbourse?
At its core, it is a matchmaking platform, connecting retiring vineyard owners who want to pass on their land with young winemakers looking to get their foot in the door. Users can browse available parcels or post their own listing if they are actively searching. Weyer says there is already real interest from a new generation, including people making a career change into winemaking.
The backdrop to all of this is a gradual but worrying trend: vineyards across the region are being left untended, slowly overtaken by scrub and woodland. Without intervention, some risk disappearing from the landscape entirely.
For working winemakers, neglected neighbouring plots are more than just an eyesore, they can be a source of disease, creating extra problems for those still tending their vines. And for a region that depends heavily on tourism, an overgrown Moselle is simply bad for business. “We don’t want that.” Weyer says.

The platform has been kept deliberately simple. Owners enter a FLIK plot reference number, and the system automatically pulls in the relevant details and plots the parcel on a map. Add a grape variety, and the listing is live within two minutes. A built-in chat function allows both sides to get in touch directly, whether they are looking to lease or sell.
Since launching in February, the response has been encouraging. Around 40 parcels have been listed, and nine have already been successfully matched. “It’s a niche topic,” Weyer acknowledges, “but we’re already very pleased with how it’s been received.”
The service covers the Luxembourg Moselle only and does not extend across the border.
With many of the region’s winemakers set to retire in the coming years, and few with a clear successor, the platform could not have come at a better time. It offers a practical way to keep vineyards in use, give ambitious newcomers a route in, and safeguard a landscape that has shaped this part of Luxembourg for centuries.
Several Moselle municipalities have already linked to the platform from their own websites: www.wengertsbourse.lu
