Now that Easter is here, preparations are in full swing across the country, with Easter eggs – whether already dyed, natural or made of chocolate – still on many people’s shopping lists.

Dyes for colouring eggs at home continue to sell well, but ready-made eggs are also ending up in shopping baskets. When it comes to chocolate, however, attitudes seem to be shifting slightly, explained Fabrice Brisson from supermarket management: “What we also see a lot at Easter, especially for children, is giving chocolate. But what we’re noticing more and more is that people now prioritise quality over quantity.”

The traditional Luxembourgish custom of the pretzel and Easter egg should not be forgotten either. The traditional Luxembourg custom of giving a pretzel at Easter is still going strong, with the favour typically returned on Easter Sunday.

Tradition also carries through to the Easter meal, where lamb remains a firm favourite: “Traditionally, it’s always lamb. Lamb remains the star, whether it’s leg of lamb or smaller cuts, it’s still what sells best for Easter tables”, according to Brisson.

Alongside chocolate, it is becoming increasingly common for children to receive gifts at Easter. And toys are not the only things the Easter Bunny brings, with flowers also proving particularly popular as spring arrives, according to Brisson.

With baskets filled and tables set, many will now spend the Easter weekend with family, continuing traditions both old and new.
