Measuring in real time how many cars pass through a street and how often speed limits are respected – or not – that is the idea behind Smartcitizens.lu. This is a citizens’ initiative supported by the Greens in the City of Luxembourg, which was presented to the press on Friday morning.
In the Bonnevoie district, traffic was analysed in nine streets for the past few months. This is done using measuring devices installed at the homes of residents who are willing to participate. The findings after several months: speed limits are frequently not respected, and there is a high volume of transit traffic. A problem for residents and also for cyclists, who do not feel safe, says François Benoy, party president of déi gréng and a city councillor.

What has been done in the city so far is not sufficient. The city’s Greens are calling for traffic calming measures and greater safety for the most vulnerable road users, namely pedestrians and cyclists.
The demands are not new. Concrete figures are now intended to help illustrate the traffic problems more clearly. It is quite conceivable to roll the project out to other districts of the city, according to François Benoy. They have already been approached by residents from other districts about the initiative.
The results of the Smart Citizens project will be presented on 14 April at the Centre Culturel in Bonnevoie.
